Aspiring Lawyer Seeks Career Guidance
In our ongoing Career Conundrums series, we delve into the challenges faced by someone shifting careers towards law, looking for economical and secure paths to qualify as a solicitor.
“Hello LC, I’m currently facing a dilemma in my career and am reaching out for some insights from the community. Originally, my academic journey didn’t include law; I earned a Bachelor’s degree with Honors (2:1) in Geography, followed by a Master’s in Town Planning. Additionally, I have independently completed and financed my Postgraduate Diploma in Law, graduating with distinction. Now as someone shifting careers, I’m at a crossroads and could really use some guidance. Here are the options I’m considering:
1. I could apply for traditional training contracts that include funding for the Solicitors Qualifying Examinations (SQEs). These positions are highly competitive and seem to be designed more for recent school graduates rather than someone changing careers like myself.
2. Another route is through the newer ‘apprenticeship’ programs offered by local governments or the civil service. While the pay might be lower than the first option, these positions are less competitive and also offer funding for the SQEs.
3. I could finance the SQE exams and possibly a preparatory course on my own. This would allow me some flexibility but involves upfront costs.
4. Lastly, I could start as a paralegal and aim to advance within a firm. This path doesn’t provide any surety, appears to be quite risky, and would mean accepting an approximate £20,000 reduction from my current salary.
I would appreciate any advice on these options!”
