Aspiring Lawyer Seeks Career Advice
In our ongoing Career Conundrums series, a government official is looking for advice on his chances of landing a training contract at a reputable City law firm.
“I earned a 2.1 degree in law from a highly regarded university, graduating more than five years ago. Since then, I’ve worked in various government roles, including positions at the Foreign Office, the Cabinet Office, and HM Treasury. Currently, I lead a team and have significant managerial duties— to put it in civil service terms, I’m at Grade 7.”
“Although I achieved a 2.1, it was on the lower end of the scale, and I scored 2.2s in crucial subjects like contract and tort law. I’m considering applying for a training contract at a recognized law firm such as Travers Smith or Clyde & Co, but I’m concerned that my background might not be competitive enough for top-tier firms like those in the Magic Circle.”
