Career Change to Law: Can You Become a Solicitor Without a 2:1 Degree?

Seeking Guidance

Continuing our series on Career Conundrums, we hear from an individual eager to transition into a legal career, requesting advice on their next steps.

“As someone looking to shift careers into law, I am at a crossroads. I completed my undergraduate degree in a non-law field in 2020, earning what is termed an ‘Ordinary Degree’, which is a pass degree without honors. Given this background, I’m curious about the paths available to switch to a legal profession. Having spent over three years as an employment advisor, I’ve developed skills that I believe could be valuable in the legal sector. However, my academic record is a concern for me, and it’s something I cannot alter. What I need to understand is whether there are law firms that do not have strict academic requirements for training contracts. Furthermore, I am interested in learning from others who have faced similar situations and successfully pivoted into law. Any guidance or experiences shared would be greatly appreciated.”
