Considering a Break to Explore the World
In our ongoing “Career Conundrums” series, we explore another intriguing dilemma faced by a young professional. This time, a solicitor apprentice deliberates over the potential impacts of embarking on a gap year right after achieving her qualification.
“As a Solicitor Apprentice who is about to complete my first year with a mid-sized law firm, I’ve missed the chance to take a traditional gap year to travel and gain diverse life experiences. I’m contemplating whether it would be detrimental to my budding legal career to take a year off after getting qualified. Would taking a gap year just after passing the SQE make me a less attractive candidate to law firms, or would my six years of prior experience provide some balance? I would appreciate any guidance on this matter.”
This solicitor apprentice is seeking advice on whether a year dedicated to personal growth and exploration could inadvertently set back her professional trajectory or if her substantial experience could mitigate any potential concerns from future employers.
