Dreaming of City Law? High Street Trainee Contemplates Big Career Move: Should They Quit?

Guidance Sought by Trainee Solicitor Eager to Transition from Local Firm to City Practice

In our latest feature from the Career Conundrums series, we explore the concerns of a trainee solicitor who is contemplating a significant career move from a local high street firm to a prestigious City law firm after qualification. The question at hand is: how feasible is this shift?

A trainee currently engaged with a high street law firm specializing in conveyancing and private client services has expressed reservations about their chosen paths. The trainee shared, “I’m starting to question whether I made the right choice by accepting a training contract at a high street firm, given that they don’t offer the specialties I’m interested in. My real ambition lies in working at a commercial law firm in the City.”

The trainee continued, “My biggest concern is the possibility of securing a position as a newly qualified solicitor at a City firm, especially since my training has been at a high street firm without exposure to the legal areas I am keen on.”

The individual is considering additional efforts to break into commercial law, stating, “I’m ready to undertake pro-bono work and conduct further research into commercial law, although I’m not convinced that these efforts will sufficiently distinguish me as a candidate for areas I haven’t specialized in during my training.”

Expressing frustration with the current trajectory, the trainee added, “I’m contemplating whether to leave my training contract since it seems to be steering me towards a career in conveyancing and private client law, areas I’m not passionate about.”

The trainee solicitor concluded with a plea for advice, saying, “Any guidance on this matter would be greatly appreciated!”
