In our latest Career Dilemma, a trainee solicitor expresses their dissatisfaction with the way a specific client has been treating them, coupled with their disappointment over the lack of guidance from their supervisor.
“Hello Dynamic Export. I’m still within my first year of a training contract at a mid-sized commercial law firm, and to be honest, I’m feeling quite disheartened by my experiences so far. A significant portion of my time has been dedicated to two or three ongoing cases, and one client, in particular, is extremely disrespectful. His manner in both calls and emails is quite hostile, and he often blames me for not completing tasks that he’s never actually instructed me to do. My supervisor, a partner at the firm, tends to take a hands-off approach regarding this client and appears perfectly fine with me managing matters independently when possible. However, I can’t shake off the feeling of frustration and anger that he is merely allowing me to be treated poorly! Am I overreacting, or should I bring this up with my supervisor?”
