A Fresh Start
In our most recent installment of Career Conundrum, a solicitor on the cusp of qualification expresses concerns about the potential repercussions a move abroad may have on their career trajectory.
“Hello Dynamic Export. I have a query for your career conundrum segment that I believe hasn’t been addressed before. I’m close to completing my qualification at a law firm in London and am contemplating a change of environment. Although it’s been indicated by my firm that newly qualified solicitors (NQs) wishing to stay will likely be offered positions (we are a relatively small group), I’m exploring the possibility of relocating to the British Virgin Islands or Bermuda. This relocation would not be permanent as I intend to move back to England, and likely London, after several years.”
“My concern stems from comments by some lawyers and discussions on forums suggesting that spending time abroad can be detrimental to one’s career upon returning to the UK. I’m somewhat skeptical of this, but I would appreciate insights from others who have experienced this. Thanks, and please keep my identity confidential.”
