Fashion Choices for a Law Firm Assessment: Seeking Guidance
A law student reaching out for advice on appropriate attire for a law firm assessment center.
“Hello! I’ve recently been given the opportunity to attend an assessment center at a law firm, which is incredibly thrilling yet nerve-wracking. This could potentially pave the way for my first vacation scheme, but the big question I have now is: What should I wear? I understand that law firms typically lean towards formal attire, yet I’ve come across mentions of some adopting a ‘business casual’ approach. My goal is to avoid appearing overly eager, yet I can’t afford to seem too laid back or unprofessional either.
Is it necessary to wear a full blouse and blazer? Would a smart top paired with black trousers suffice? Are shoes as critical as they are made out to be? Coming from a background where ‘business wear’ was never a requirement, I’m concerned about potentially standing out for the wrong reasons if my outfit isn’t up to par.
I would deeply value any insights from those who have previously navigated this process or who are familiar with the norms of the industry—what should I wear to my assessment center?
Thank you in advance for your help!”
