Aspiring Barrister Dilemma: Take a £17K Pay Cut for a Career-Boosting Role?

Is the Financial Sacrifice Worth the Potential Career Advancement?

In this edition of our Career Conundrums series, an aspiring barrister seeks advice on how to obtain a pupillage and contemplates if a lower-paying job might enhance their resume.

“Over the past four years, I have worked as a commercial litigation paralegal, initially at a large firm in the City and subsequently at a respected boutique firm. Having recently completed the Bar Course, I am now pursuing pupillages in areas like mixed civil or personal injury law. I’ve managed a few first-round interviews and just one final-round interview. I believe taking on a paralegal role more aligned with my goals might improve my CV, but it would mean accepting a decrease in salary of at least £17k! Should I endure the salary reduction with hopes of long-term benefits? Are there other ways to gain pertinent experience besides mini-pupillages?”
