The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently assessing General Motors Co. following reports that upwards of 870,000 of its full-size trucks and SUVs may be susceptible to engine failure.
This preliminary inquiry by NHTSA targets potential malfunctions in V8 engines installed in several models including Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, as well as Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade SUVs, covering model years 2019 to 2024.
According to NHTSA’s online documents, engine failure could potentially cause a loss of power in the vehicles, increasing the risk of accidents. The agency has noted 39 related incidents, thankfully with no injuries reported so far.
Reported issues include bearing failure that might lead to the engine seizing or a connecting rod breaking through the engine block, often without any prior warning, as per NHTSA’s findings.
General Motors has issued a statement affirming its cooperation with the NHTSA’s ongoing investigation.
