It’s becoming increasingly straightforward to cancel recurring subscriptions.
A recent post by a frustrated Reddit user highlighted the difficulties in cancelling subscriptions, particularly when changed circumstances, such as a defunct work email, prevent access to the account needed for cancellation. This user’s inability to cancel a web service because their work email was no longer active showcases the common frustrations many face.
The issue of subscription cancellation has become so prevalent that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has stepped in with new regulations to simplify the process. These rules, which will be fully in effect later this year, mandate that companies make cancelling a subscription as easy as signing up.
In 2025, the FTC noted that it receives approximately 70 complaints daily about recurring subscriptions, a significant increase from 42 daily complaints in 2021.
“Companies need to address this issue,” stated Chuck Bell, a financial policy advocate at Consumer Reports.
Here are four effective strategies for cancelling subscriptions:
Use the Company’s Name in Web Searches
Chuck Bell recommends beginning with a simple web search of the company’s name for specific cancellation procedures. “This can often lead you to useful contact information or a specific cancellation process others have used,” he explains.
Reaching the correct person to talk to is often the first hurdle in resolving such issues, Bell adds.
Take Your Complaint to a Higher Level
If cancellation remains difficult, Bell suggests escalating the issue by contacting senior company officials, sharing your grievances on social media while tagging the company, or formally complaining to regulatory bodies like the FTC, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, or your state’s attorney general. Though these agencies generally track trends rather than resolve individual complaints, they can be effective avenues for more serious grievances.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) also processes complaints, often mediating directly with companies. Complaints can be lodged for free and usually resolve within 30 days, according to BBB spokesperson Melanie McGovern.
Request Help from Your Bank or Credit Card Provider
Should direct cancellation attempts fail, Bell advises disputing the charges with your credit card issuer or setting up a “stop payment” order with your bank. However, he warns that this can be complicated and might incur fees, so it should be considered a last resort.
Maintain a Record and Use Personal Email Addresses
To prevent issues like losing access to a work email, McGovern advises using a personal email for personal subscriptions and providing alternative contact details where possible. Keeping thorough records of all subscription communications can also streamline the cancellation process, she suggests, recommending storing such emails in a dedicated folder.
Reddit, the online forum, serves as a popular platform for discussions on a variety of topics, including financial issues, where users can share and discuss their experiences anonymously.
