It embodies an eloquent dialogue between historical and contemporary elements, thoughtfully designed by Design Emotions Atelier, under the guidance of architect Evi Kotsou.

The name itself—“Corte Interna,” which translates to inner courtyard—invites us to enter a realm of ageless architecture, emotive design, and modern living that offers a respite from the frenetic pace of contemporary life.

A Harmonious Trio Around a Courtyard

Situated on a 420 sq.m. plot, the 220 sq.m. complex consists of three unique stone buildings thoughtfully arranged around a central courtyard—an architectural choice that conveys both closeness and openness. At the core of this design, water serves as a unifying element, gently flowing between the structures and instilling a sense of tranquility in the environment.

This inward-looking layout pays homage to the rich heritage of Venetian-influenced Cretan architecture, featuring pointed arches, semi-circular doorways, and low-arched lintels that evoke the island’s complex history.

Building One: A Modern Intervention in a Historic Shell

Upon entering from the main road, visitors are greeted by the first structure—a two-story edifice that masterfully blends preservation with modern reinterpretation.

• Ground floor: An open-plan living area along with a bedroom featuring an en suite bathroom.
• First floor: Two more en suite bedrooms and a separate WC.

One of the most striking design features of this building is the installation of an internal door, a newly created entry that connects the ground-floor bedroom to the remainder of the house, which was previously accessible only from the exterior. This entryway, framed in metal, serves as a subtle yet sincere nod to the building’s evolving narrative.

At the heart of the residence, a metal spiral staircase, constructed from perforated sheet metal, rises in a sculptural manner—its curves and lightness contributing a sense of dynamism and modernity. Meanwhile, the original stone staircase remains outside, accompanied by a small domed area below that has been left undisturbed, paying tribute to its historical allure.

The structural integrity of the building was enhanced with cement injections, while the exterior plaster was replaced with natural mortar, allowing the stones to be visible. Inside, the original stonework is exposed, complemented by polished concrete floors that provide a sleek, contemporary contrast.

Building Two: Tranquility by the Pool

Just a few steps down at the pool level, the second building presents a shift in material composition.

• Exterior: The stone façade has been preserved.
• Interior: Finished with gunite, ensuring both structural support and a calming aesthetic.

The highlight of this structure is the use of natural travertine, which not only adorns the floors but also flows seamlessly from the interiors to the courtyard, encircling the pool and continuing into the kitchen of the main building. This material creates a cohesive sense of unity and elegance throughout the complex.

Building Three: Elevated and Introspective

Perched at a slightly higher elevation, the third building is accessible via a metal staircase, reinforcing the theme of intentional contrasts.

Inside, an old fireplace has been creatively repurposed as a skylight, allowing natural light to flood into the bedroom below, a poetic transformation that revitalizes a piece of history. The floors are adorned with natural cotto tiles, which extend into the courtyard, establishing a warm connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

Outdoors, a metal pergola, shaded with reeds, creates a textured overhead covering—encouraging guests to gather, linger, and reflect.

The Emotional Landscape of Corte Interna

What truly enhances this project is how materiality serves as an emotional language:

• Metal, wood, fabric, glass, and gypsum act not just as construction materials but as participants in a theatrical performance that unfolds across time.
