Etihad Airways, national airline of the United Arabs Emirates (UAE), has been named the world’s leading airline in the latest World Travel Awards.

With more than 100 categories, the World Travel Awards are determined through a vote by travel agents worldwide.

Categories include the world’s leading airline, cabins, lounges, and airport, among others.

This year’s World Travel Awards leading airline was at odds with Skytrax’s annual list as Etihad claimed the survey’s top spot, though placing seventh in the Skytrax poll.

Skytrax’s overall winner, Emirates, claimed the title of best First Class lounge and best airline rewards program in the World Travel Awards.

The Skytrax list of the world’s 100 best airlines announced in June last year uses a survey of air passengers spanning 160 countries.

With over 18 million respondents, Skytrax is the largest airline survey in the world.

Topping the list was the Dubai-based, Emirates, jumping from Number 8 the previous year to top the list. Emirates knocked Qatar down one position from its previous Number 1 reign. Singapore Airlines maintained the third position, followed by ANA All Nippon Airway and Asiana Airlines.

Online questionnaire

Asian airlines dominated the top 10 without a single European or American brand managing to sneak in. Air Canada was the only North American brand in the top 20 (at number 20), while Lufthansa was the first European carrier to rank in at number 11.

Skytrax conducted the survey using an online questionnaire about passenger experiences with airlines on the ground, onboard and during a 10-month period.

Forty performance indicators were used to calculate the list including check-in, boarding, onboard seat comfort, cabin cleanliness, food, beverages, inflight entertainment and staff service. The survey covered more than 200 airlines.

Both surveys agreed that Etihad offers the best First Class cabin.

The World Travel Awards last year celebrated its 20th anniversary.
