Singapore Airlines passengers will soon have access to super fast Internet services on the majority of international flights. 

The leading carrier is upgrading the speed of its in-flight Wi-Fi, which will enable flyers to enjoy up to 50 Mbps of Internet speed – on a par with the connection most people are used to at home.

The airline has selected Inmarsat Global Xpres (GX) Aviation as its connectivity provider.

The system is set to be installed in the second half of 2016, starting with its Boeing 777-300ERs aircraft, followed by its Airbus A380s and A350-900s.

“What is particularly exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can do with connectivity,” said Singapore Airlines OnAir’s CEO, Ian Dawkins. “We already provide connectivity solutions for airline operations, from flight tracking to crew tablets, and from electronic flights bags to air traffic control AIRCOM services. The introduction of GX Aviation opens up a whole new world of opportunities for the connected aircraft.”

Also, Singapore Airlines recently launched a new mobile app for both Apple and Android smartphones, as well as the Apple Watch.

The new app offers a redesigned user interface with new features including a contextual homepage that displays the most relevant information about upcoming trips.

Faster and easier flight bookings

A new “My Trips” page keeps necessary information such as flight dates and booking references at the customer’s fingertips, while also providing customised images that offer a sneak preview of what to expect during upcoming flights.

Customers can access an integrated flight schedule and booking widget that enables faster and easier bookings of flights, as well as a widget that displays current flight status.

KrisFlyer members will also be able to view their membership details such as miles and tier info in an easy-to-read design. Further enhancements will also be rolled out progressively to the app.

Apple Watch users can access features such as Glance View, incorporating trip reminders and up-to-date information such as when counters are ready for check-in.

Built in conjunction with Mobile Travel Technologies Ltd, the new Singapore Airlines app is available for download at the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
