In 2015, interior designer Krista Collard and her spouse Ben were on the hunt for a suitable family dwelling in Sydney. They came across three Californian bungalows available for purchase. One particular bungalow caught their attention, not because it was particularly lavish, but because it boasted a vibrant kitchen and living space.
Krista envisioned, “This modest house, with its two bedrooms and a single bathroom, has the potential to be transformed into an ideal family home with some modifications.”

Residing There
Krista and Ben, along with their children Toby and Macy, settled into the home. They installed a swimming pool and renovated the bathroom. However, by 2020, the space began to feel cramped. A significant renovation was necessary.
Major Transformation
Their renovation plans included adding a second story that would feature additional bedrooms, bathrooms, and a play area for the children. They aimed to convert one of the existing bedrooms into an office and living space, and the bunk room into a guest room. The renovation would also encompass a new kitchen, pantry, laundry room, and a living space that opens onto a deck equipped with a fireplace and barbecue.
Fusing the Old with the New
Krista and Ben aimed to avoid the typical modern extension. They sought to blend the original charm of the house with new, luxurious elements. Their goal was to create an environment reminiscent of a high-end hotel, complete with exquisite finishes and spaces designed for both family gatherings and individual relaxation.
The Culinary Space
Given their passion for cooking, the kitchen was a focal point of the renovation. It now features an inviting and luxurious design with marble countertops, brass fixtures, and blue-black cabinetry.
The Washrooms
The bathrooms have been transformed into spa-like retreats, complete with standalone tubs and marble-lined walls. Krista wanted these spaces to offer a special and serene escape.
The Primary Bedroom
Inspired by a hotel in Barcelona, the main bedroom has been designed to be bright, cozy, and stylish, featuring soft hues and striking artwork.

Overall Outcome
The house is now perfectly suited for all seasons. In the summer, they enjoy barbecues on the deck. In the winter, the family gathers by the cozy fireplace.
Krista remarks, “It fulfills all our needs and more.”
