Reviving the 1950s: Modern Twist Transforms Classic Apartment!

At the core of Thessaloniki, Greece, an iconic apartment has been superbly renovated. The project, spearheaded by Fluo Architecture & Design Studio, skillfully combines the area’s historical essence with the requirements of contemporary living. Situated close to Aristotelous Square, the apartment’s design is inspired by the city’s mix of Byzantine, European, and Arabian influences, a reflection of Thessaloniki’s enduring spirit and diverse heritage, particularly following the transformative 1917 fire.

Honoring Historical Grandeur

This apartment, dating back to the 1950s, features impressively high ceilings that reach 4.05 meters, adorned with exposed beams and detailed gypsum decorations which have been meticulously restored. The design team introduced precise lighting solutions to emphasize these architectural highlights, underscoring their historical importance.

In the main living space, the height limit of 3.20 meters for constructions ensures the area remains spacious and bright. This careful design choice respects the building’s historical architecture while meeting modern demands for open, luminous living environments.

A Flooring Feast for the Eyes

The flooring tells a historical narrative, with a mosaic pattern that runs from the entrance to the kitchen, acting as a visual guide through the building’s history. This modern interpretation of a traditional rug cleverly integrates the apartment’s past with its present functionality.

Elsewhere in the apartment, traditional chevron parquet flooring nods to one of the oldest European flooring styles, symbolizing a continuum of architectural craftsmanship from the building’s original era to today.

Fusion of Cultural Elements

The design of the apartment intricately weaves Thessaloniki’s multicultural background into every aspect. Each material, piece of furniture, and artwork has been selected to reflect the city’s diverse influences, creating a living space that is both timeless and modern, where historical charm and contemporary lifestyle harmoniously intertwine.
