New applications for Export Marketing Development Grants (EMDG) open on July 1 this year.

Austrade cannot accept applications after December 1 this year, unless lodged by an approved EMDG Consultant, who can lodge March 3, next year.

The EMDG grant application process now uses a new online system, available through:

Hard-copy paper-based grant application forms will no longer be accepted.

Before beginning an online application, Austrade recommends the following:

  1. Obtain an AUSkey to enable your business to easily and securely access the new on-line system.
  2. Make sure you are able to upload documents in support of your application. You will need a scanner, to convert any paper documents to PDF.

You can visit the how to apply section on Austrade’s EMDG page for more information on the new application process.

If you are engaging an EMDG Consultant to prepare your application, you do not need an AUSkey yourself. Grants consultants usually charge on a success fee basis.

The EMDG scheme, administered by Austrade, is a long standing form of assistance to exporters. The scheme pays grants to a large number of Australian exporters each year. Administered by AUSTRADE it provides up to 50 percent rebate on certain exporting marketing and promotional expenditure to a maximum grant of $150,000 a year for each applicant.

Earlier this year Minister for Trade Andrew Robb announced the EMDG scheme would receive a $50 million government injection to help small and medium sized businesses reach their export potential.

Now changes to the EMDG scheme will see the threshold of expenses required before a firm becomes eligible for a grant reduced from $20,000 to $15,000 and the number of grants available to eligible companies will be increased from seven to eight.
