Australia leads Asia-Pacific on swine flu response

Australia leads Asia-Pacific on swine flu response article image

Minister for Foreign Affairs Stephen Smith has pledged $3 million to the World Health Organisation (WHO) to combat swine flu. The funds will go towards improving detection of the H1N1 virus, otherwise known as human swine influenza, as well as surveillance and emergency preparations for outbreaks in developing countries, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. Half the money will be to assist Asia-Pacific countries in strengthening their capacity to respond to a pandemic, while the other half will support WHO's Global Pandemic Response Plan. The $3 million comes in addition to the $100 million over four years that Australia has allocated for detecting, preventing and responding to emerging infectious diseases in the region.
