When it comes to advanced manufacturing, Australian companies continue to punch above their weight on the global stage.
Australia is fast gaining a reputation as a leader in the field of medical technology.
And one innovative company that continues to lead the way is Queensland based Cook Medical Australia.
In the 1990s this family-owned company became one of the world’s largest privately held medical device manufacturers.
Founded in early ‘60s by researcher and visionary Bill Cook, Cook Medical works closely with medical professionals to develop technologies that improve medical procedures and deliver better outcomes for patients.
Its technology has helped eliminate the need for open surgery.
Last year, Cook Medical Australia exported 94 percent of its locally manufactured products to 64 countries.
Its headquarters at Brisbane Technology Park, Eight Mile Plains, employs nearly 600 people.
In response to growing global demand for its endovascular stent grafts, Cook Medical Australia is increasing the manufacturing capacity of this state-of-the-art facility by nearly 70 percent.
This will include the addition of an afternoon production shift.
Recruitment is underway for an additional 94 full-time employees who will take the total number of skilled technicians employed across two manufacturing shifts to 231 by the end of the year.
The Eight Mile Plains manufacturing facility produces endovascular stent grafts for the treatment of aortic aneurysms. It is one of the few sites in the world that custom-makes these products to fit individual patient anatomies.
Increased export potential
Cook Medical Australia also develops and manufactures products used in the IVF process onsite.
Cook Medical Asia Pacific and Vice President - Cook Incorporated Barry Thomas says the expansion in production capability will increase the company’s export potential.
It would also improve flexibility for employees and strengthen the company’s commitment to Australian manufacturing and investment in the local community.
“Over the last 39 years, Cook Medical Australia has built a strong reputation for product innovation and manufacturing excellence, and this significant increase in our local capacity ensures we are able to meet the growing demand for our products both here and overseas,” Mr Thomas said.
“The expansion at Cook Medical Australia includes the addition of an afternoon shift to accommodate the growth and improve flexibility for both new and prospective employees.
“The new shift has generated significant interest amongst our current as well as our former employees and opportunity has afforded greater flexibility to better manage personal and family commitments.”
“Manufacturing is essential to the economy and this expansion demonstrates Cook Medical’s commitment to manufacturing, innovation and jobs in Queensland,” he said.
