The Export Council of Australia (ECA) has welcomed the reappointment of Simon Birmingham as the Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment in the new Morrison Cabinet.
“We are very pleased to see Simon Birmingham return to the Trade portfolio,” said Heath Baker, acting CEO of the ECA.
“In his eight months in the role,” said Mr Baker, “Senator Birmingham has proven a highly effective minister.”
One of Senator Birmingham's major achievements his short time in the trade portfolio was to deliver $65 million boost for the Export Market Development Grant (EMDG), a key policy to encourage businesses to start exporting.
“It's a critical time in international trade,” said Mr Baker. “Senator Birmingham has much to do internationally to help protect the international trading system while continuing to improve Australia's market access.
“But he also has a big domestic agenda given the Coalition is committed to an ambitious goal of 10,000 new exporting businesses, as well as 240,000 trade-related jobs in this term of government.
“We look forward to seeing the government's plan to deliver this.”
