Surprise Japan trade surplus raises hopes for recovery

Surprise Japan trade surplus raises hopes for recovery article image

An unexpected trade surplus for Japan totalling more than A$900 million has led to hopes of an early recovery for the world's second largest economy. It was Japan's third consecutive monthly surplus. While the April figure is down 85 percent compared to the same period last year, it was significantly above expectations, which had predicted a deficit of about A$928 million. Concerns over the four percent contraction recorded for the March quarter have now given way to hope that production and exports have bottomed out, even if signs of a full recovery are still tentative.
