The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) took home the IMEX 2009 Green Supplier Award at the IMEX annual exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany last week, confirming the centre's environmental excellence and its contribution to the development of the meetings and incentive travel industry. "We are incredibly proud of the extensive efforts which have gone into ensuring we lead the way with our environmental initiatives," said MCEC chief executive Leigh Harry. Harry added that he hoped the award would act as a benchmark for the centre: "We take this issue very seriously and will continue to assess every single aspect of our operation to ensure we’re meeting best practice both now, and in the future." The MCEC has a six-star environmental rating and has both Green Globe and Waste Wise accreditation. It is the only venue of its kind in the world to hold this rating and the only one in Australia to have the two accreditations. The convention centre will open this month, adjacent to the existing exhibition centre.
