With a cult following already firmly in place and their vibrant designs adorning the bikini bodies of world famous celebrities, Indhra Chagoury and Jeremy Somers (who make up fashion label We Are Handsome) are the new edgy darlings of swimwear. After enjoying success with her Oscar & Elvis swimwear label, Chagoury joined forces with Somers, who was then head of design for People Like Us. Their luxe designs and bold prints evoke playful eras past, fusing retro style with timeless sophistication. They have consistently graced the pages of fashion bibles such as Vogue and Elle and their designs are sold everywhere from Australia to the US and Europe and as far away as Iceland and Dubai. Now in its second year, the DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship aims to identify Australia’s emerging fashion talent and assist them in achieving international business growth. This year’s other finalists were dress designer to the stars Rachel Gilbert and Kim Ellery of the fashion label Ellery. "Indrha and Jeremy have an impressive export strategy backed up by unique prints and designs," said Jamila Dlala, global multinational customer manager from DHL Express Australia and one of the judges. Lucia Labbate from IMG Fashion and Australian fashion designer Nicola Finetti were the other judges. The scholarship received a number of high calibre entries proving there is an emerging talent pool of Australian designers that have the business acumen to succeed overseas. "We looked at the key categories of design, marketing, business and export and were incredibly impressed by the talented finalists," said Diala. "Not only do they have a unique and creative flair for design, they have a strong business sense and direction to cement themselves in both the domestic and international markets." The scholarship is open to Australian fashion designers who have been exporting for less than four years. The winner receives international freight to the value of $10,000 and coaching in freight and logistics from DHL Express. Entrants have to complete an official application and submit a design portfolio. Entries were judged across a variety of categories, including design, marketing, business and export.
