The 48th Australian Export Awards were co-presented by the Austrade and the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI). The 12 category winners earned more than $3.5 billion in export sales during the 2009/10 financial year and employed nearly 13,000 people, according to Minister for Trade Dr Craig Emerson, with SMEs punching well above their weight in the representation.

Small to Medium Services: Pivot Maritime International

This Tasmanian designer and manufacturer of maritime simulators has extended its core business by providing training, consultancy and research services to its customers. The simulators recreate conditions from small speedboats to full-size bridge controls, and are portable and price competitive, making them accessible to a wider range of customers. The two core ranges include navigation and bridge simulators, from simple compact systems through to integrated multi-purpose systems installed in custom-built facilities. They are used to train marine pilots, tug masters, vessel traffic service operators, small boat operators, seafarers and defence personnel. They are also used for top-end port research and development work to guide the redesign of existing ports and the creation of new ones, and to monitor and improve operational efficiency. With key markets of commercial shipping, recreational boating and defence in US, Asia-Pacific and Europe, Pivot works in partnership with strategic clients to continuously validate, update and evolve its products. "Pivot Maritime International is a Tasmanian company operating on the world stage and investing in areas of development in a tough marketplace with a great level of risk, proudly Tasmanian and very bold," says Lou Clark, executive officer of the Launceston Chamber of Commerce. Launched in 1996, the company now has headquarters in Legana, Tasmania, and a technical centre in Riddells Creek, Victoria. Maritime training institutions, safety regulators, ship owners, pilots and various companies and organisations use Pivot Maritime’s simulators for training, assessment and research. Defence organisations also use their products and services for operational training, research and analysis. Pivot Maritime provides both nationally and internationally accredited courses and is an International Association of Lighthouse Authorities-accredited vessel traffic services training institution and Australian Marine Sciences Association-approved training provider. Its consultancy and research services include simulation studies, analysis of technological developments in commercial shipping and defence industries, assessment of ports, shipping operations and maritime logistics, maritime audits, cost-benefit analysis, industry reviews and risk management assessments.
