Visit to strengthen ties with Latin America article image
Minister for Foreign Affairs Stephen Smith will visit Brazil for the first time today and tomorrow, and Chile later this week, to strengthen ties with these two important Latin American nations. In Brazil, Smith will meet with counterpart Celso Amorim to discuss the development of a Plan of Action for an Enhanced Partnership between Australia and Brazil. He will also address and how Australia and Brazil can cooperate to meet key global challenges in forums such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organisation and the G20. Smith will later see Chile’s new Foreign Minister Mariano Fernandez to build on Australia and Chile's existing bilateral relationship, which has already seen a free trade agreement come into force earlier this year. Smith wants to deepen trade and investment relations in the field of education, science and agriculture.
