US economy steady but stressed

US economy steady but stressed article image
US Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke believes the US economy is showing "tentative signs of stabilisation" but says the Reserve will keep rates low for the time being as the market steadies. "The pace of decline appears to have slowed significantly, and final demand in production have shown tentative signs of stabilisation," said Bernanke. "The past few months have seen some notable improvements." However, he did express caution, saying the economy still showed signs of stress. Meanwhile, economists have warned that the high unemployment rate of 9.5 percent could unravel the stabilisation of the financial markets and the broader economy.
