Trade and Competitiveness Minister Craig Emerson is visiting Turkey for a series of high-level meetings focusing on Australia’s trade, investment and cultural ties with the nation. Dr Emerson will hold talks with Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan, Trade and Economic Minister Zafer Çaglayan, Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek and Agriculture Minister Mehdi Eker on expanding the commercial relationship between the two countries. He will also address global economic developments and the role of the G20, which Turkey will host in 2015, following Australia in 2014. Additionally, the Trade Minister will deliver a speech at a policy research centre on the history and potential of the Australia-Turkey relationship. Dr Emerson believes Turkey is an influential partner for Australia as it is considered to be the bridge between Europe and Asia. "We have a productive relationship, but there is scope to do a lot more," he said. About 67,000 Australians claim Turkish descent and the two countries hold ties through the 1915 Gallipoli landings. Dr Emerson will also lay a wreath at the tomb of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founding father of modern Turkey and a hero at Gallipoli.
