Tourism ministers call for global support

Tourism ministers call for global support article image
Some 80 tourism ministers from around the world gathered at the World Travel Market, London, last week to discuss the implementation of global policies that would boost support for the tourism industry. The UN's World Trade Organisation Ministers' Summit ended with the ministers reiterating that tourism, and its related industries, is one of the world's top job creators and could in turn support the move towards a green economy. "Tourism needs to win positions on national and global agendas. Our industry can build effective and longstanding bridges between the public and private sector, be a reliable job creator and as a global industry contribute to both climate change response and poverty alleviation," said UNWTO's temporary secretary-general Taleb Rifai. The ministers urged their governments not to impose additional financial burdens on the travel industry such as unfair taxation, and encouraged them to maintain stimulus measures to assist tourism. The UNWTO Roadmap for Recovery is available for download.
