Export proposal angers Port Lincoln mayor article image
A second company, Lincoln Minerals, has submitted a proposal to export minerals through South Australia’s Port Lincoln, prompting an angry reaction from mayor Peter Davis. Lincoln Minerals submitted the application in response to the South Australia State Government’s approval of Centrex’s proposal,  a sticking point for the mayor. "There is a suggestion from Lincoln Minerals [that] because Centrex has been already approved then why shouldn’t they?" said Davis. "It simply compounds the inevitable [environmental] consequences for Port Lincoln." Davis is concerned about the impact of the iron ore exports on the environment, particularly the marine life, vital for the region’s cornerstone fishing industry. However, Centrex managing director Gerard Anderson thinks it is unwise to pit the minerals sector against the fishing industry. "When the fishing industry is facing the likelihood that people are going to be laid off, I would have thought the Port Lincoln Council would at this time be doing everything they could to try and attract new business to the area," he said.
