Minister for Education Julia Gillard has announced $1.8 million in grants for 141 schools nationwide in Round One of the government's Becoming Asia Literate: Grants to Schools outreach program. Round One includes 86 projects in 141 primary and secondary schools promoting the teaching and learning of Asian languages and/or studies of Asia. The program targets China, Indonesia, Japan and Korea in particular. Worth more than $6 million in total, the Asia literacy program forms part of the National Asian Languages and Studies in Schools Program (NALSSP). According to Gillard's department, due to strong demand, additional funding of $1 million has been provided to supplement the program, which has significantly increased the number of schools receiving a grant under Round One. NALSSP includes an aspirational target whereby at least 12 percent of students complete year 12 with a fluency in one of the target Asian languages at a level sufficient for engaging in trade and commerce in Asia and/or university study, by 2020.
