The rules of engagement with China are, simply, there are no rules because the pace of China's evolution means change is inevitable. Today's Sydney launch of the Australian Business Foundation's Engaging China report revealed that there is both a diversity of models and a certain level of agility and adaptability required of businesses when operating in China. The report, Engaging China: The realities for Australian businesses, contains 25 in-depth case studies of Australian firms that have done business with China, of varying sizes and from a number of different industries. The publication is not a 'how to' for doing business with China, but a reality check, said study co-author Keith Suter. He believes Australian businesses must look beyond the hype to develop a strategy for successful engagement. One speaker, Wendy Simpson of Westray Engineering, said that in her experience doing business in China was more about people-to-people than business-to-business relationships and that the "aim of any business is to be as family-like as possible". There will also be a launch event for the publication in Melbourne later this week.
