Remove enviro talk from Doha: US groups

Remove enviro talk from Doha: US groups article image
A number of US business groups have urged their government to drop environmental negotiations for the next Doha Round of trade negotiations, expressing frustrations that the talks have taken so long to resolve. The groups believe that discussions over environmental goods and services is slowing the process for other trade initiatives. "We don't think that Doha should hold this particular initiative hostage," explained Jeremy Preiss, vice president and chief international trade counsel for United Technologies Corp. Separating the environmental goods and service pact from the main round would assist international efforts to reach a new treaty in December to reduce greenhouse gas emissions blamed for climate change, according to the business groups. A spokesperson for the US Trade Representative's office said they were still committed to the World Trade Organisation's push to remove trade barriers in the environmental sector, but believed that avenues other that the Doha Round may work better.
