Looming industrial action by British Airways (BA) staff could affect the travel plans of Australians flying with Qantas to Britain. BA staff voted to strike for 12 days over the holiday season to dispute job cuts and salaries. If the stoppage goes ahead from next Tuesday as planned, up to a million passengers could be left stranded, with 70,000 of those passengers on the UK to Australia run alone. Strong ties between Qantas and BA mean there will be some disruption for Qantas passengers, but spokeswoman Olivia Wirth says she is confident any problems can be overcome. "We've been working overnight to make sure that Qantas passengers during the Christmas period can be accommodated on existing Qantas services, which will provide certainty for Qantas customers travelling to the UK," she said. Qantas said it will do what it can to help BA customers travel, but they may have to be flexible when they fly. "Customers will be contacted over coming days regarding their travel options and we will continue to provide information on," said Wirth. "We encourage people to check the website to make sure they understand if their travel is going to be affected. Alternatively, they should contact their travel agent."
