Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd has appointed a new ambassador to the United Arab Emirates with a non-resident accreditation to the State of Qatar. Pablo Kang will take up his appointment this month, taking over from Doug Trappett who has been ambassador to the UAE since 2009. Australia's largest merchandise trade partner in the Middle East, the UAE has two-way trade with Australia valued at over $5.3 billion in 2010-11. The UAE also support Australia's efforts to conclude a GCC-Australia-Free Trade Agreement which will provide new trade and investment opportunities for Australian firms. Australian investment already in the UAE was valued at more than one billion dollars in 2010. Over 600 Australian companies do business currently in the UAE with 15, 000 Australians also calling it home. Around 3,000 Australians are resident in Qatar. Kang comes from a series of senior positions with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), most recently Assistant Secretary to International Organisations Branch.
