Indian student leader sceptical of safety statements

India's External Affairs Minister SM Krishna has accepted reassurances by New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees that Indian students are safe to study in Australia following yesterday's meeting with the Premier.
"Indian students are going to be safe in Australia and Indians, by and large, are most welcome in Australia: that is the message I got from the Premier of New South Wales," he said.
However, Mayank Sharma, a member of the University of Technology Sydney student council and part of a NSW Government taskforce on foreign students does not believe the problem has been solved yet.
"Statements are statements," said Sharma. "Until you get some results and some facts, actually, just something is going on."
Sharma said he and his friends have suffered personal racial attacks since the issue gained global media attention: "Personally for me I think the situation is getting worse rather than getting better."
Krishna will meet with Australian counterpart Stephen Smith and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd today, who are both keen to smooth over the affair.
