Free trade confirmed for ASEAN and India article image
Officials representing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and India yesterday signed a free trade agreement that is expected to boost trade to $60 billion in seven years. ASEAN representative Porntiva Nakasai, commerce minister of Thailand, said the FTA was a sign of good relations between the bloc and India and "comes at an appropriate time taking into account the current world economic crisis". The signing follows years of negotiation and covers a region of 1.7 billion people. The agreement also underscores ASEAN's focus on developing trade relations with key economies to ensure the region stays relevant in the global economy.
