Container exports lift in new year article image
Data released by the Port of Melbourne reveal that while there has been a 4.4 percent decline in container trade through the port, business has begun to lift since the new financial year began. According to port CEO Stephen Bradford, trade has grown in the last two months. Of note was strong performances from the timber, pulp and wastepaper, and dairy sectors. "When you look at the impact the drought is having on southern Australia, particularly growth exports, timber up 21 percent, dairy products, always a Victorian staple, up 18 percent, we think they're good figures at a time when the global economic downturn is affecting many Australians," he said.
