Colleges should be regulated: Indian Minister

Colleges should be regulated: Indian Minister article image
Concerned with the poor quality of education offered to students by private vocational colleges, Indian Minister for External Affairs S.M.Krishna has called for greater regulation of Australian institutions. The move would also assist Australia to salvage its international reputation, he said. "I think [disreputable colleges] are not only bringing a bad name to Australia but they are destroying the future of the younger generation of Indian students." Krishna praised the Federal and State Governments' timely actions to assuage India's concerns, but says any action needs to be sustained for real change to occur. "I would want the tempo to be maintained so that signals are constantly flowing to India, so that governments are constantly responding to meet our concerns," he said. "Some dubious educational institutions have lured gullible Indian students into joining ... Perhaps there is case for a new regulatory regime to be put in place as far as these private education providers are concerned."
