Port Alma, near Rockhampton, Queensland, may be the site of the next major coal export facility after the Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) began discussions with Xstrata Coal to transform the area. As part of the port's strategic plan for the next 12 to 18 months, GPC wants to deal with the mining company with the view for Port Alma to become a significant port on the Queensland coast, according to GPC chief executive Leo Zussino. "The middle harbour is at the moment being investigated for a coal exporting terminal by Xstrata coal which is tied to the development of the Wandoan mine in the Surat Basin," he said. "Xstrata have moved into their pre-feasibiltiy stage for that and we've given them the first right of refusal to build, own and operate that terminal." Xstrata has the right to build a coal terminal with the capacity to handle 30 million tons a year. "We envisage supporting rail infrastructure from Bajool will be built to service the new facility," Zussino added.
