Chinese expats could stifle trade links

Conflicts between Chinese expatriates and the citizens of the countries in which they settle could be a hindrance for China's establishment of global trade links, according to Scott Harrison, founder of Pacific Strategies and Assessments in Hong Kong.
Chinese businesses and workers have been the target of violence in emerging economies, including countries in the Pacific, North Africa and South America, where some locals believe they are taking jobs.
Chinese influence has increased with heavy investments in infrastructure, particularly in Africa and South America, says Harrison: "They have grown in significance because they come with open arms, few restrictions, they are willing to pay bribes and kickbacks where others aren't."
But he warns that the problem won't just disappear. "It's kind of a tinder box, which I think will continue to raise its ugly head from time to time until the Chinese get smarter and more savvy about dealing globally," said Harrison.
