China and the UK have entered a series of trade and investment deals worth US$500 million, which will boost environmentally-friendly industries in both countries. UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown identified environmentally-friendly industries as a key growth area for the nation and expressed enthusiasm toward developing trade with an emerging growth economy like China. Included in the new deals is a contract between Pilkington Group, the UK branch of Japan's Nippon Sheet Glass Co, and Chinese glassmaker Shanghai Yaohua Pilkington Glass to build a new factory for energy-efficient glass. The government-supported Carbon Trust will work with the China Energy Conservation Investment Corporation to assist the sale of green technology in China. Business Secretary Peter Mandelson's department issued a statement to say the deals "will benefit British businesses while helping China meet its tough environment and energy efficiency targets".
