China to appeal to WTO on foreign arts

China will look to appeal a World Trade Organisation (WTO) decision that would force it to ease its rules on the importation of foreign films, music and printed material, according to Yao Jian, spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce. "China expresses regret that the panel did not reject the US complaint about the import and distribution of printed material, films and music," he said, "China will carefully evaluate the panel's report and does not rule out appealing on issues of concern to the Chinese side." On Wednesday, the WTO ruled that China had breached international trade rules by restricting foreign-owned companies from acting as importers and wholesalers of the material. The US expressed concern that its creative industries - including the Hollywood film industry - would be excluded from reaching the Chinese market. "These findings are an important step toward ensuring market access for legitimate US products in the Chinese market, as well as ensuring market access for US exporters and distributors of those products," said US trade representative Ron Kirk.
