China is running an awareness campaign against 'risky' private colleges in Australia, instead directing its increasingly lucrative international student trade to accredited universities and TAFE colleges. The closure of several private institutions has damaged Australia's educational reputation, prompting the Ministry to call private colleges "unstable and risky even if they have been approved by local authorities". The Chinese Education Ministry has issued an alert explicitly warning Chinese students against enrolling in private Australian colleges: "Students should be cautious and not choose education providers that mainly enrol international students under a short-term business model based upon education as export." The alert included a list of approved education providers. Chinese students comprise approximately a quarter of Australia's international student population, making the alert "significantly influential" according to Australia's Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.
