China fights EU, US trade barriers via WTO

China fights EU, US trade barriers via WTO article image
China has issued formal complaints to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) with regard to trade barriers set by the European Union and the USA. The complaint against the EU concerns high import tariffs on Chinese steel fasteners, while China will fight the US on a poultry ban. The EU has said that the tariffs are a reaction to Chinese 'dumping', where products are sold below cost to drive off competition. WTO rules allow a government to introduce import tariffs if domestic companies lose substantial sales from dumping. "The EU's decision to impose measures was taken on the basis of clear evidence that unfair dumping of Chinese products has taken place with state distortion of raw material prices," said Lutz Guellner, spokesperson for the European Commission. Since 2007, the US has banned Chinese chicken imports due to health reasons and have replied that they are looking into the safety of Chinese chickens. The EU and USA and China's two biggest customers. The WTO may dismiss China's complaints or award China the right to cut EU or US imports using tariffs.
