Wine Australia awards student scholarships

Wine Australia is wooing export markets by awarding seven students in key export destinations scholarships to explore Australian wine regions.

The scholarships will enable students from Canada, the United States of America, Germany, Ireland, Hong Kong and China to learn more about the Australian wine industry during an eight-day travel program.

Spokesperson for Wine Australia Annabel Mugford said the scholarships are a tangible way to promote Australian wine to consumers, trade and the media in key international markets.

“The objective of the scholarship is to raise awareness and knowledge of the fine wine and regional personalities that the Australian wine community has to offer,” she said. “As a result of the visits, the scholarship winners then become Australian fine wine ambassadors in their markets.”

The scholarships were awarded in partnership with the United Kingdom-based Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET). Each of the recipients has studied with WSET, undertaking a diploma or advanced certificate.

The winners are Plumen Velikov (Canada), Virginia Cole (USA), Thomas Curtuis (Germany), Ken Behan (Ireland), Chung Pui-Hong (Hong Kong) and Jim Yang (China).
