Technology aids global business language

English is the chosen language of the European Union and the most popular second language for those whose first language is not English. It has also become the language of business, according to technology company GlobalEnglish.

“The whole notion of being an American company or a French company is no longer the case. You are a global company,” said Deepak Desai, CEO of GlobalEnglish.

He added that English is spoken more by non-native speakers than it is by those to which it is the primary language: “The original vision is to democratise the teaching of English, and it is incredible to see we can do that.”

The company specialises in internet technology that allows employees from many different linguistic groups to connect via English. The tool include online tuition as well as features such as templates for letters to text-to-speech translations that include differences between accents such as British and American.

“The English spoken between a Malaysian and a Japanese does not correspond to what you might find in Shakespeare; it is what you need to get work done,” said Mahesh Ram, GlobalEnglish vice president of worldwide business development.

GlobalEnglish will be the host of a two-day event next week in San Francisco, USA, which brings together the world’s leading companies to discuss how English competence can improve business.
