Support for tourism will boost economy

The United Nations World Trade Organisation (UNWTO) believes that supporting tourism may be the way to boost the global economy.

According to UNWTO Assistant Secretary-General Geoffrey Lipman, tourism is “resisting the worst that the deterioration of the market place is delivering” but the sector will need to show governments how crucial it is to the wider economy in respective countries.

“A lot of countries don’t understand how important tourism is. The most important thing is to solve today’s problems with solutions that will last and will pay back in the future,” said Zoheir Garranah, Egyptian Minister of Tourism in support.

Lipman believes raising the profile of tourism in both the political and public perception by positioning it as a sector that mobilises employment, investment and sustainable development opportunities for emerging economies will see it rise on the global economic agenda.
