Queensland architecture has global opportunities: critic

by Adeline Teoh   Monday 29 June 2009 12:56 pm

Queensland’s talents in the architecture field just need some global exposure to open it up to “exciting opportunities”, according to US architecture critic Debra Pickrel.

The writer, known for her work on the American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, visited architectural projects in the Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville regions and also attended the Australian Institute of Architecture regional awards in Cairns during a 10-day visit this month.

“The use of natural materials, the adaptability of inside-outside living, these are so in tune with what people are looking for today: purposefully focused building design that addresses environmental concerns,” said Pickrel.

She added that these architectural talents “could well translate to develop projects in Florida, the US south west and south east, and Hawaii. Their work would be well suited to bring to those places in particular, which all share warmer climates and variable conditions, much the same as Queensland”.

Pickrel also said Queensland’s open and collaborative approach to design was a plus.

The writer’s visit was organised through the Queensland Government’s HEAT initiative, which is a marketing campaign designed to promote Queensland’s architectural and related design industries globally.
