QLD coal expansion approved

More than $500 million will be invested into the expansion of coal facilities in Central Queensland. The BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) announced it will begin final feasibility studies for the Caval Ridge Coal Mine and Hay Point Stage 3 Expansion projects.

Queensland Resources Council CEO Michael Roche said that the addition of some 8 million ton per annum of coking coal production and the expansion of privately-owned port facilities indicated “growing confidence in global economy’s recovery and the future of coal” and a boon for Queensland.

Roche referred to a recent Federal Government report on the state’s export industries in commending the expansion of the operation, and added: “This level of new investment by Australia’s biggest coal miner … adds weight to forecasts that coal mining will be among the industries requiring an additional 23,000 new employees by 2020.”
