Protesters arrested over Indian student attack

Victorian police have arrested 18 protesters among the hundreds of Indian students staging a sit-in outside Melbourne’s Flinders Street Station last night.

The protesters banded together to express their anger over violence towards Indian students after 25-year-old student Sravan Kumar Theerthala was stabbed with a screwdriver. Theerthala remains in hospital, having been admitted last weekend.

Federation of Indian Students of Australia (FISA) spokesman Gautam Gupta said the group had organised the rally to increase awareness about recent “hate crimes” and to promote racial harmony, but the peaceful protest had been hijacked by others with a different agenda.

The Australian export sector receives a significant amount of money from Indian students, and the issue has been raised with the Indian Prime Minister and the Indian High Commissioner to Australia.
